They collected human fat from graveyards and also gathered poisonous plants. The human fat was combined with poisonous plants and herbs, then boiled to create an ointment. This ointment was applied to a broomstick that they would then climb on, hoping to meet the Devil. The ointment on the broomstick would seep into their skin, causing them to fall asleep. Many in this state, experienced visions of flying through the sky on broomsticks, which contributed to the myth of witches flying on broomsticks.
